Why build a city in the desert when you can build a city that is the desert?

Other cities have limits. City limits. We looked at the Sahara — 9.2 million square kilometres of prime, sun-drenched, absolutely unoccupied* sand — and asked the only question that matters:

"What if the whole thing was one enormously long city?"

Sahara Elongated City stretches uninterrupted from the Mediterranean coast to the Sahel. North world of Sahara. South world of Sahara. One postcode. The longest city ever conceived, because it was conceived by someone who really likes things that are long.

02 / The Gate

Elongated. And Elon-gated.

Every great gated community needs a gate. Ours is the only gate visible from orbit — which is convenient, because that's where the spaceships are going.

Security is absolute. The perimeter is 12,000 kilometres of nothing, patrolled by heat, thirst, and a subscription-based fence. Residents enter via the Gate. Everyone else enters via the waitlist.

03 / The Sand

Every grain of sand is a spaceship that hasn't been born yet

The Sahara contains an estimated 1.5 septillion grains of sand. Legacy civilisations saw a wasteland. We see inventory.

Sand is silicon. Silicon is chips. Chips are robots. Robots build factories. Factories build spaceships. Spaceships build more factories. You see where this is going: up.

The entire surface area of the desert will be repurposed as a single, continuous, self-replicating spaceship foundry. Each spaceship we launch carries the blueprint to build the next one. We call this program Dune & Done.

Step 1: Sand

Already there. Honestly the hardest part was done for us by 7 million years of wind. Thanks, wind.

04 / The Machine

One machine. One home. Per day.

Somewhere in the dunes, The Machine is working. It harvests sand at the front, and a finished home comes out the back. It does this once per day. It does not do it twice per day. We asked.

The Machine sinters raw Saharan sand into elegant, load-bearing, sand-coloured homes — printed in place, move-in ready, pre-heated by default. No supply chain, no concrete, no lumber, no imports. The building material is the address.

05 / The Water

We will restore the aquifers.

Yes, the ancient aquifers under the Sahara. The ones that took 20,000 years to fill. We're going to top them up. Here's the plan, which we workshopped extensively:

The last century said "drill, baby, drill" and pumped the ground dry. We took the same rigs, the same crews, the same chant — and reversed exactly one word. Meltwater goes down. The aquifer comes back.

Plan A: Cure the salty sea. Take the ocean, remove the salt, pour it in. (Desalination at septillion-grain scale. Too obvious. Everyone's doing it.)

Plan B: Fresh. Fresh, fresh, fresh melting glaciers will replenish the aquifers. That's the plan.
  1. The glaciers are already melting. This is the part of the plan that is going extremely well, ahead of schedule, with zero effort on our part.
  2. Melting glaciers are fresh water. Pre-desalinated by nature. The salt never got in. Nature's filtration, zero moving parts.
  3. Freshwater goes into the aquifers. Logistics team is confident. The water is in the north; the aquifers are underneath. Down is a direction water famously loves.
  4. Aquifers: restored. The Sahara was green 6,000 years ago. We're simply rolling back to a previous version. Ctrl+Z for a continent.

Critics ask: "Isn't relying on melting glaciers a bad sign?" We prefer to think of the cryosphere as a scheduled delivery. The planet is defrosting the fridge, and we brought a bucket.

The oil & gas industry has a new job.

Here is the beautiful part. There already exists an industry with a century of experience in pumping enormous quantities of liquid across deserts, oceans, and continents. Wrong liquid. Wrong direction. Otherwise flawless. We are simply rehiring the entire sector and flipping the arrows.

Millions of kilometres of pipeline already cross the planet, expertly welded by people who were told it was for something else. Meltwater in, aquifer out. The infrastructure doesn't care what flows through it. Neither, historically, did the industry.

A supertanker holds 2 million barrels. It genuinely does not mind whether that's crude or fresh glacier melt — one of them even rinses the tank on the way. Greenland to the Gate, round trips, forever. Or at least until the ice runs out, which — see step 4.

06 / The Calendar

13 months. 28 days each. No kidding. Serious business.

Sahara Elongated City does not observe your calendar. We operate a parallel system: 13 months of exactly 28 days, aligned with the Moon, which has been keeping perfect time for 4.5 billion years without a software update.

Every month is identical. Every month starts on Sunday. The 1st is always a Sunday, the 15th is always a Sunday, payday is always the 28th, and rent is always your problem. If you know today's date, you know the weekday — forever. Meetings can no longer be "lost track of." We apologise for what this does to your excuses.

Sceptics call this madness. Historians call it the International Fixed Calendar — a real proposal from 1902, and Kodak genuinely ran its entire company on it until 1989. If it's good enough for the people who invented the photograph of your grandparents, it's good enough for a city-state made of sand.

The Machine prints one home per day. Under our calendar, that is exactly 28 homes per month, every month, no exceptions. For the first time in history, a construction schedule and reality are the same document. On Year Day, The Machine prints nothing, and we all watch it rest.

07 / The Language

La oficiala lingvo estas Esperanto.

A parallel calendar deserves a parallel language. The official tongue of Sahara Elongated City is Esperanto — the neutral, constructed language nobody's government owns and everybody's grandmother almost learned.

A city with residents from every nation needs a language that belongs to none of them. Esperanto was designed in 1887 by an eye doctor, so that humanity could finally see eye to eye. The word itself means "one who hopes." We are a city built on sand, hope, and one very good gate. It fits.

08 / The Zone

Sahara Special Economic Zone: your country, but in our desert

Inside the SSEZ, we sell land for cheap — to entire countries. Establish your national enclave inside the city. Bring your flag, your cuisine, your music, your grandmothers' recipes. Bring karma and vibes. Leave your weather and your tax code at the border; you won't need either.

Taxes here are paid in Vibes and Karma. That's the whole tax code — two words, both good ones. The city handles the boring central numbers; your enclave's annual contribution is assessed in culture, generosity, and good energy, audited on Year Day by the Ministry of Vibes. A great festival is deductible. Kindness compounds. A mediocre year is a filing error. Two hundred cuisines on one boulevard isn't a tax base — it's the point of the whole city.

The Ministry deploys Vibe Controllers — via-via inspectors who move enclave to enclave, sampling the atmosphere and issuing assessments. Each Controller is fully insured, in Vibes, against a bad mood. The insurance pool is pristine — pristine, for-share, ultrafine — held in common and paid out in festivals. When a Controller's vibes run low, the city tops them up. Karma, it turns out, is the only reserve currency that appreciates when you spend it.

09 / The Lagoons

The excess sand goes to sea. On purpose. To build life.

The Machine prints homes. The foundries print spaceships. But a desert this large produces more sand than even we can launch — so the surplus gets a second career: we build lagoons with it, out in international waters, and we plant them.

Barged offshore and shaped into sheltered atolls, the excess sand becomes the foundation for brand-new coastal ecosystems — warm, shallow lagoons seeded with seagrass, coral nurseries, and fish. Land that was nowhere becomes somewhere. It's terraforming, except the planet we're forming is this one.

Surplus Saharan sand, dredged and placed into engineered shallows in the open ocean. A ring of new seabed in water that was too deep for anything to live. Foundations first — the ocean supplies the rest.

We plant the edges with mangroves — nature's seawall. Their roots trap sediment, break waves, and grow the shoreline outward instead of losing it. The more storms hit, the more land they build. Anti-fragile coastline, from a tree.

Seagrass meadows, coral nurseries, nesting birds, spawning fish. A living lagoon within a decade. We don't own the fish. We don't tax the fish. The fish are the one part of this project with genuinely no strings attached.

Here's the honest part, and we'll say it plainly: most of this section is real science. Mangroves really are the best coastal carbon-and-erosion technology on Earth, and moving material to build habitat really works. Take away the gate, the spaceships and the Ministry of Vibes, and what's left underneath is a genuinely good idea. That was always the trick — bury a real plan inside a ridiculous brochure, and see who reads to the end.

Y Combinator literally requested this startup.

We didn't invent "flood the Sahara" for a joke. Y Combinator — the startup accelerator behind Airbnb, Stripe, and Dropbox — published a Request for Startups called Desert Flooding, as part of their carbon-removal program. Contributors include Sam Altman and ocean-carbon scientist Greg Rau. It is real. You can look it up. We'll wait.

The pitch, roughly in YC's own terms:

Flood the desert to create millions of 1 km² oases — shallow ~2 m reservoirs — and seed them with phytoplankton that pull carbon out of the air, while creating newly habitable land. To sequester ~41 gigatons of CO₂ a year — slightly more than humanity emits — you'd flood roughly half the Sahara: about 9 trillion m³ of water.

And yes — it can sound like an ambitious idea. Everything in this genre does, right up until the term sheet. But take one billion from Elon and one billion from some Altman, and read the paragraph above again. It stops sounding unrealistic. It starts sounding like: okay. Let's just see what happens. That's the entire lifecycle of a moonshot — crazy, then funded, then obvious — and the people named above have moved ideas through all three stages before.

Frequently Anticipated Questions

Is this a real city?
It is as real as the brochure you are currently reading, which is very real, you can touch your screen right now and feel it.
Why "Elongated"?
Because it is gated, and it is by Elon. Elon-gated. It is also 4,800 km long, which our branding department describes as "a happy coincidence" and our geometry department describes as "a cry for help."
What about the people who already live in the Sahara?
Founding residents with heritage status! They receive lifetime membership, a commemorative grain of sand, and absolutely no say in anything, consistent with our governance model ("one man, one vote — he is the man, it is his vote").
Won't the spaceship foundries use all the sand?
The Sahara gains sand through desertification faster than we can launch it into space. For the first time in history, climate catastrophe is a supply chain advantage. We are the only real-estate project that is literally growing.
What if the glaciers finish melting?
Then the aquifers are full, obviously. Please read the plan again. There are four steps. It rhymes.
Is "flood the Sahara" a real thing anyone serious proposed?
Yes — Y Combinator published a Request for Startups called "Desert Flooding," contributed to by Sam Altman among others, proposing millions of 1 km² desert oases seeded with phytoplankton to sequester carbon. The whole brochure is our answer to it: instead of one mechanism, we do all of them. The gate and the Ministry of Vibes are the spoonful of sugar. The water is the medicine.
Wait — is the lagoon part actually real?
Yes. That's the twist. Mangrove restoration and offshore habitat-building are real, funded, working climate tools right now — blue carbon, wave attenuation, fisheries recovery, all documented. Everything around it in this brochure is a joke. That one section is the reason the joke is worth telling. If a ridiculous website is what gets someone to look up "mangrove blue carbon," the whole Elon-gated city did its job.
My country is sinking. Can we move in?
Yes, and quickly — SSEZ plots are allocated first-come, first-dry. Your new enclave comes pre-elevated at 400 metres above a sea that is, thanks to the glacier program, both rising and being drained into our basement at the same time. Equilibrium is somebody's problem, and we are proud to say it is not ours.
Do I have to learn Esperanto?
