Thirty million people live around a lake that has almost disappeared. This is the least funny and most important page on the whole site. We want to put the water back.
Around 30 million people across Chad, Niger, Nigeria, and Cameroon depend on the Lake Chad basin for fishing, farming, and herding — some estimates for the wider basin run far higher. It is one of the most important water bodies in Africa, and it is nearly empty.
Read that number again, because it is the whole reason this page exists. Not tourists. Not residents-in-waiting. Thirty million people whose food and water sit on top of a lake that has lost most of itself inside a single lifetime. That is not a brochure statistic. That is an emergency wearing a statistic's clothes.
In the 1960s Lake Chad covered around 25,000 km². By the 2000s it had collapsed to as little as ~1,350 km² — a loss of roughly nine-tenths. It's shallow, it's endorheic (no outlet to the sea), and that makes it terrifyingly sensitive.
Three forces drained it at once: a drier, hotter climate; booming demand for irrigation as the basin's population grew; and the plain shallowness of the lake, which was never more than a few metres deep. A small drop in rainfall or a big rise in withdrawal, and the map redraws itself. The honest picture: the lake fluctuates and the southern pool persists, but the long trend has been brutal.
The Sahel dried through the 1970s–80s. Inflow from the Chari River — which supplies most of the lake — fell with it.
More people, more irrigation, more water pulled out upstream. Demand climbed exactly as supply fell. The lake paid the difference.
A lake a few metres deep has no buffer. Endorheic and flat, it turns small deficits into vast retreating shorelines.
Here's the "insane, but real" part. There is a genuine, decades-old plan to refill Lake Chad by moving water across the continent from the mighty Congo basin — the second-largest river system on Earth, which pours most of its flow uselessly into the Atlantic. It's called Transaqua.
Proposed by the Italian engineering firm Bonifica in the 1980s and seriously revived at an international conference in Abuja in 2018, the scheme would build a long canal from tributaries of the Congo, channel a small fraction of their flow northward into the Chari River, and let it flow down into Lake Chad — refilling it, generating hydropower along the way, and supporting irrigation and transport for the countries it crosses.
A fraction of the Congo's flow, borrowed and sent north. Hydropower and irrigation the whole way. Real proposal. Real feasibility studies. Not yet a real canal.
The Congo discharges an ocean's worth of freshwater into the Atlantic. Transaqua asks for a single-digit percentage of it. The donor barely notices; the recipient comes back to life.
A canal with that much fall can run hydro stations along its length — the project could pay part of its own way in electricity for the region it crosses.
It would cross and benefit a string of nations — irrigation, navigation, power. That's also the hard part: a project this big needs unprecedented cross-border trust. That, not the digging, is the real obstacle.
We would not pretend this is easy, cheap, or without serious environmental questions of its own — interbasin transfers can do real ecological harm and deserve real scrutiny. But it is a genuine idea that serious people keep returning to, precisely because the alternative is watching thirty million livelihoods dry out.
When a lake that feeds millions retreats, the people don't vanish with it — they crowd onto the last wet ground, they migrate, they lose their income, and desperation becomes a resource that armed groups recruit from. The shrinking of Lake Chad is tangled up with displacement, hunger, and years of violent instability across the region.
So "refill Lake Chad" isn't landscape gardening. It's food for farmers, water for herders, fish for fishers, and a reason for young people to stay and build instead of flee or fight. Restore the lake and you're not just moving water — you're removing the vacuum that catastrophe grows in.
