Baikonur is the first and largest cosmodrome in human history. Sputnik left Earth from here. Gagarin left Earth from here. Every crewed Soyuz still does. And here's the part most people don't know: it belongs to Kazakhstan. Russia just rents it — roughly $115 million a year, on a lease running to 2050.

Every crew that launches from Baikonur already trains for the steppe — and returns to it, by parachute, into terrain that looks so Martian that film crews cheat with it.
