California has a below-sea-level lake that was created by accident, boomed like a Riviera, and is now shrinking into toxic dust so pungent that Los Angeles — 150 miles away — has smelled it. We've seen this movie. We know how it ends: refill, baby, refill.
In 1905, engineers cut an irrigation canal from the Colorado River — and lost control of it. For two years the river poured into the Salton Sink, a desert basin some 70 metres below sea level, until it had created California's largest lake by accident.
Sound familiar? A deep, dry, below-sea-level depression; water arrives via one channel; a lake appears and the desert changes. The Salton Sea is the Qattara Depression Project that already happened — unplanned, unbudgeted, and running as an uncontrolled natural experiment for 120 years. It is the best evidence on Earth that flooding a desert basin creates something people flock to. And the best warning about what happens when you stop maintaining it.
In the 1950s and 60s the accident became the "Salton Riviera" — marinas, yacht clubs, waterskiing, resort towns rising out of the desert. At its peak the sea drew more visitors than Yosemite. Sinatra played. The Beach Boys raced boats. Lots sold like the future.
Hold onto that, because it's the load-bearing fact of this whole page: water arrived in a desert sink, and a boom followed within a generation. Nobody had to be persuaded to move to the water. They came on their own, towing boats. The Elongated City's entire pitch — flood the basin, life shows up — isn't speculation here. It's archival footage.
Bombay Beach, North Shore, Salton City — real towns, real marinas, real property booms, all conjured by accidental water. The desert didn't resist. The desert threw a party.
Then the water turned and the crowds left, leaving half-buried towns that photographers now call "post-apocalyptic." Wrong. They're pre-revival. There's a difference, and it's this page.
A boom that happened once by accident can happen again on purpose. This time with plumbing, governance, and a Ministry that audits the vibes annually.
The sea is fed almost entirely by agricultural runoff — fertiliser, nutrients, decades of it — and since the water transfers of 2003 cut its inflows, it has been shrinking fast. What's left is saltier than the ocean, starved of oxygen, prone to mass fish die-offs — and in September 2012, a windstorm stirred the rotting bottom water and sent a hydrogen-sulfide stench 150 miles northwest into Los Angeles. Air-quality officials traced it, confirmed it, and put it on the record.

As the shoreline retreats it exposes dried lakebed — playa — laced with a century of agricultural residue, and the wind takes it straight into the lungs of the communities around the sea. This is not historical: the studies below are from 2024 and 2025.
Nearly 1 in 4 children in the northern Imperial Valley has asthma — roughly triple the national rate — and new research directly links dust events from the receding sea to measurably reduced lung growth in children.

Like the minefields of Qattara and the shores of Lake Chad, this is the part with no punchline: fixing the Salton Sea is worth doing regardless of everything else on this website.
The refill plan writes itself, because California already wrote it: bring ocean water from the Sea of Cortez — the Gulf of California, roughly 200 km south — over a modest rise at the border, then downhill all the way into a basin 70 metres below sea level. Gravity finishes what the pump starts. Where have you heard that before?
Plan A: Pipe it from the Gulf of Mexico. (Majestic. Also ~2,000 km away, on the wrong side of the continent. The founder liked the branding; the geographers staged an intervention.)
Plan B: The Sea of Cortez — the gulf next door. Short haul, big drop, seawater at scale. That's the plan. It has feasibility studies.And here's where we keep our own rule about honesty: in 2022, California convened an Independent Review Panel on water importation. It examined the Sea of Cortez concepts seriously — and recommended against them for now, favouring desalination plus local water instead [6][7]. That's not a defeat; that's what a real megaproject pipeline looks like mid-argument. Qattara has been mid-argument since 1912. The important thing is the state studied "refill the sea from the ocean" as a real option, in public, with engineers. The Overton window is already wet.
The panel's own preferred mix: desalt the brine, recycle local flows, stabilise the level. Less romantic than a canal; measured in the same unit — acre-feet of "we chose not to let it die."
Whatever water arrives, the new shoreline gets what our other shores get: engineered wetlands and habitat edges — the state's Species Conservation Habitat wetlands are already being built — dust capped, birds returning, the Pacific Flyway resupplied.
Below-sea-level basin + nearby ocean + gravity = power, habitat, and a town. Egypt's version is still a blueprint. California's ran once by accident. Between them: the entire argument of this website.
The revival doesn't need to import its economy, because it's already dissolved in the ground. The geothermal brines under the sea's southern shore hold an estimated 3,400 kilotons of lithium — enough for 375 million EV batteries, per a Berkeley Lab analysis. America imports nearly all its lithium; the largest domestic source is under the smelliest lake in the country [8][9].
Eleven geothermal plants already hum on that shore. Extract the lithium from the brine, inject the brine back down, sell the batteries, and spend the royalties on the water and the wetlands and the clinics. Do it with BaseX accounting — People, Planet, Prosperity, externalities on the books — and the same communities that breathed the dust get first claim on the boom. That's the whole model of this city, running on one lake: the mess pays for the fix.
